What Factors Affect Your Invisalign Timeline?
Several variables determine how long you’ll wear your aligners:
1. The Complexity of Your Case
Simple spacing or mild crowding can be corrected in 6 to 12 months. Moderate crowding, overbites, underbites, or crossbites typically fall in the 12 to 18 month range. More complex bite issues that involve significant tooth movement may require 18 to 24 months or longer. During your initial consultation at any of our three offices, we’ll use advanced digital scanning technology to map out your treatment and give you an accurate estimate.
2. How Consistently You Wear Your Aligners
This is the biggest factor you can control. Invisalign aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours per day to stay on track. You should only remove them for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing your teeth. Patients who consistently hit that 22 hour target often finish treatment on or ahead of schedule. Failing to hit the wear time is the most common reason treatment takes longer than planned.
3. Age and Biology
Teeth move slightly faster in younger patients because their jawbones are still developing. Adults can achieve excellent results with Invisalign, it just may take a bit longer in some cases. That said, many of our adult patients at LakeStone Orthodontics complete treatment well within the average timeframe.
4. Aligner Change Schedule
Most patients switch to a new set of aligners every one to two weeks. Dr. Patel will determine the right cadence for you based on how your teeth are responding. Patients whose teeth track well may move to weekly changes, which can shorten overall treatment time.
A General Timeline Breakdown
While every patient’s journey is unique, here’s a general idea of what different treatment lengths look like:
- 6 to 10 months: Minor crowding, small gaps, or slight relapse after previous orthodontic treatment.
- 12 to 18 months: Moderate crowding, mild bite issues, or a combination of spacing and alignment corrections. This is the most common treatment range.
- 18 to 24+ months: Complex bite problems, significant crowding, or cases requiring substantial tooth movement across multiple arches.
Tips to Keep Your Invisalign Treatment on Track
Want to finish your treatment as quickly as possible? Here are some tips our team recommends:
- Wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours per day. Set a timer or use the Invisalign app to track your daily wear.
- Switch to new trays on schedule. Mark your aligner change days on your calendar so you never fall behind.
- Keep your aligners clean. Rinse them every time you remove them and brush them gently to avoid buildup that can warp the plastic.
- Attend all scheduled appointments. Regular checkups at our Buffalo, Getzville, or Springville offices allow us to monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed.
- Use your chewies. These small foam cylinders help seat your aligners properly so your teeth move as planned.
What Happens After Invisalign?
Once your active treatment is complete, the next step is retention. You’ll wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new positions. Retainers are essential to protecting your investment and making sure your results last a lifetime.
