What Is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment, also called Phase 1 or interceptive treatment, addresses developing orthodontic issues in children while their jaws are still growing. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, not necessarily to start treatment, but to identify any issues that would benefit from early intervention.

At age 7, children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, giving orthodontists a clear picture of how the bite is developing. In many cases, we simply monitor growth and wait for the right time to begin treatment. But in some situations, early intervention can make a significant difference.

Early treatment can guide jaw growth, correct harmful oral habits like thumb sucking, create space for crowded permanent teeth, and reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth. By addressing these issues early, we can often simplify or shorten later treatment, and sometimes avoid more invasive procedures like tooth extraction or jaw surgery.

At LakeStone Orthodontics, Dr. Patel and Dr. Bochacki take a conservative approach to early treatment. We only recommend intervention when it will provide clear benefits for your child’s long-term oral health and smile. Many children don’t need early treatment and do just fine waiting until their permanent teeth have erupted.

Off the very first intersection with the young lady (Kat) who answered the phone I felt comfortable. She was very patient and explained everything I need to know as a new patient. When I came in any staff that I made eye contact with spoke and made us feel welcome

I can’t express and rave how awesome Dr. Patel and his office staff Kelly and Kat have been. Dr. Patel actually cares about his patients and he is very skilled and dedicated to making sure his patients are completely happy and leave his office with a winning smile! Kat and Kelly are the friendliest, kindest office staff I’ve ever met. Everything has been hassle and worry free. If you’re looking for any dental care you will have a very difficult time finding a better dentist and staff around! Thank you so much Dr. Patel, Kelly and Kat for making my daughters dental experience so easy!

We are extremely pleased with Dr. Patel. We did not have a good experience with the previous orthodontist. Dr. Patel is very thorough, friendly and comforting. He took the time to explain everything and had my daughters best interest in mind. Bridget was also instrumental in helping my daughter understand the "why's" of brushing and flossing, especially when using a retainer. None of this was explained to us previously. We are very fortunate Dr. Patel and Bridget have taken over my daughters care. I highly recommend this practice if you want the best outcome as well as having a Healthcare team make an impact on a teenager, for good lifelong habits.

After a challenging few years with Suburban Orthodontist, we are so thankful for the positive transition to LakeStone Orthodontics. Our daughter has finally completed her orthodontic treatment and is now able to have her braces removed, which is a huge milestone for our family.
Dr. Patel has been exceptional. He is kind, knowledgeable, and truly prioritizes his patients’ well-being. His professionalism and genuine care have made a meaningful difference in our experience.
Kat, the practice manager, has also been wonderful. She is consistently friendly, understanding, and supportive, especially considering the difficulties we faced prior to the transition. Her compassion and professionalism do not go unnoticed.
From the moment you walk through the door, the entire staff is welcoming, caring, and attentive. We are very pleased with the level of care we’ve received and would confidently recommend LakeStone Orthodontics to anyone seeking orthodontic treatment. Our son will absolutely be continuing his care with Dr. Patel.
Thank you to Dr. Patel and the entire LakeStone Orthodontics team.

We have been patients of this orthodontic practice for the past 5+ years with 2 children in treatment and 2 more future patients. The transformation under Dr. Patel’s care has been so much better than it was before he started this new practice. Before he took over, our experience was extremely inconsistent and often frustrating. There was a lack of communication amongst the office staff and the previous orthodontist and the patients Since Dr. Patel stepped in, it has been the complete opposite.

Dr. Patel is transparent, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in the well-being of his patients. He takes the time to explain every step of the process, answers questions thoroughly, and makes both parents and kids feel comfortable and informed. It’s clear he cares deeply about creating a positive experience and delivering excellent results.

Although he had a lot of “undoing” to do when he took over the practice, he has handled it with professionalism, integrity, and a clear commitment to improvement. We are extremely happy with the care our children are receiving now and highly recommend Dr. Patel and his team!!

Dr. Patel is very attentive and caring. If you have a issue he immediately puts you at ease and assists with concerns. His team is absolutely great and caring as well, they are always so pleasant. My previous scans had a missing far back tooth when I have a tooth there (previous scan from previous owner) Dr. Patel agreed with me that tracking would be fine but that missing tooth would not track with the rest and scanned me for new trays when previous Owner/Dr. Wouldn't and said it was fine to wear with a missing tooth. (I dont like to talk about previous owners however due to the circumstances and how it played a roll in my ortho process i am) I was so happy that Dr. Patel took my concerns seriously, agreed with me and promptly got me new trays. Fast, efficient, and accommodating all before christmas. Highly recommend them!

The entire team was so welcoming and patient, and they took the time to answer all of my questions without ever making me feel rushed. Their bedside manner is truly outstanding — kind, professional, and reassuring from start to finish. The service was excellent, and I felt completely comfortable throughout my visit. Benefits of Early Treatment

Guide Jaw Growth

Direct jaw development while bones are still growing for better facial balance and bite.

Avoid Extractions

Create space for crowded teeth, potentially eliminating the need to remove permanent teeth later.

Correct Bad Habits

Address thumb sucking, tongue thrust, and mouth breathing before they cause lasting damage.

Simplify Future Treatment

Early intervention often makes Phase 2 treatment shorter and less complex.

Protect from Injury

Protruding front teeth are more vulnerable to trauma. Early correction reduces this risk.

Boost Confidence

Help your child feel good about their smile during important developmental years.

Early Treatment FAQs

Q

Does my child definitely need treatment at age 7?

Not necessarily. Most children who visit us at age 7 don't need immediate treatment. The evaluation allows us to monitor development and plan for the optimal time to begin treatment if needed.

Q

Will my child need braces again later?

Many children who have Phase 1 treatment will need Phase 2 treatment (full braces or aligners) once their permanent teeth come in. However, Phase 2 is often shorter and simpler because of the early intervention.

Q

What types of appliances are used for early treatment?

Depending on the issue, we may use palatal expanders, space maintainers, partial braces, or habit-breaking appliances. We'll explain exactly what your child needs during the consultation.

Q

Is early treatment more expensive overall?

When you factor in the potential to avoid extractions, reduce Phase 2 treatment time, or prevent jaw surgery, early treatment often provides excellent value. We'll discuss costs and financing options with you
